			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Recent press about successful and unsuccessful leadership has left me wondering whether the paradigm of ‘leadership styles’ is falling apart and becoming irrelevant for modern leaders to use as a frame of thought when crafting their own leadership qualities.</p>
<p>Firstly – it was commonly known that what is known as <a href="http://www.leadership-expert.co.uk/leadership-styles/">autocratic leadership style</a>, was unpopular but worked. In other words, those who were decisive and firm in their decision making usually rose to the top as a result of their personal successes, qualifications and reputation.</p>
<p>However the <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/interactive/2011/mar/22/middle-east-protest-interactive-timeline">Arab spring in the Middle East</a> (Beginning with Egypt, then Tunisia, Libya, Syria etc) has shown that autocracy is not a guaranteed win. Autocracy, despite its conscious effort to exclude the thoughts of others – only perpetuates when it is actually indirectly supported by those it seeks to exclude. This is a very interesting point, and is certainly worth more discussion at a future date on this blog.</p>
<p>Then we move across to the democratic leadership style, which was supposed to succeed because the wishes of the many would be reflected in the decisions of the few – in the belief that the leaders will feel they need to obey the wishes of the majority to win re-election. But what has come from democracy – a slow and steady creep of bureaucracy which has enlarged governments to the point where public spending (to please the voters) was funded by government debt, and therefore was effectively being spent with the money of future generations. How has the democratic leadership style here really benefited society? A tough question to answer.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It is always said that leaders are born, however this is not true. People who want to be great and effective leaders can learn to be one. Everyone has leadership potential but some people maybe better than others; however that does not mean you cannot be a good and effective leader. <a href="http://www.leadership-expert.co.uk/how-to-be-a-leader/">How to be a leader</a> is simpler than you&#8217;d think!</p>
<p>A leader is someone that makes things happen that would not happen in the first place. Therefore leadership is a process that helps people, teams and organization achieve their goals and objectives. The leader requires the right set of <a href="http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Publicationsandstatistics/Publications/PublicationsPolicyAndGuidance/DH_4090843">knowledge, skills</a>, abilities, values and behaviors to influence other people in a positive way. No everyone is born with the right skills but they can defiantly be learnt with commitment, determination and motivation.</p>
<p>Leaders need to make sure they have the understanding and knowledge of specific takes, knows how to build teams, have the skills and abilities to communication, have a vision and is willing to take risks while valuing each member of the group.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Knowledge and Understanding:</strong> Leaders need to make sure that they have the knowledge and understanding of what is expected from them. This may include, knowledge of the organization or business, knows how to make goals and plans and an aware and capable of completing all the tasks and duties that are required.</li>
<li><strong>Ability and Skills to Communicate:</strong> The leader has to a good communicator to express him or herself clearly with confidence. But no leader can be a good communicator is he or she does not listen.</li>
<li><strong>Work with A Team:</strong>  No one can achieve the goals and objectives of the organization alone.  An effective leader forms great relationships with his or her group members. The leader should support and assist group members to achieve both personal and company goals.</li>
<li><strong>Develop A Vision:</strong> No leader is complete without a vision. Vision is necessary to make things happen that have only be dreamt about. With the right skills the leader should communicate his or her vision to the followers.</li>
<li><strong>Risk Taking:</strong> A good leader is an innovator and a risk taker. Without having confidence in one self, no leader can be successful.</li>
<li><strong>Encouragement and Recognition:</strong>  An effective leader should take out the time to recognize the follower’s potential. With encouragement, rewards and motivation the leader will have loyal followers that will perform their best.</li>
</ul>
<p>So if you want to be leader, then it is important that you follow the above points. However, if you do not have the right skills, qualities or traits, you can easily learn them with practice and taking the right courses and training.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Money is an interesting subject to mix in with the leadership themes of Team Leadership. I have a passion for personal finance and have decided to incorporate these themes into this blog to help create a rich tapestry of management and business advice which will hopefully reflect the mix of leadership and <a href="http://eprints.lse.ac.uk/20698/">financial pressures on companies</a> today. Whilst Team Leadership doesn&#8217;t aspire to be a one stop shop for business management advice &#8211; I do feel like this two themes will be complimentary and will improve the overall quality of the website.</p>
<p>Two Key Topics I&#8217;d like to cover on Team Leadership &#8211; Investing, and Money.</p>
<p><strong>Investing</strong> is a topic very close to my heart. I began investing when I was just 19, and have always keep my head in the markets ever since! The thrill of investing is quite something, and although downs will inevitably occur, over the long term we all expect a healthy return from the stock market (with the long term being 10-25 years in this case). We&#8217;ll be looking at topics such as <a href="http://www.financial-expert.co.uk/how-to-buy-shares-online/">how to buy shares online</a>, and how to choose which stocks you want to buy.</p>
<p><strong>Money</strong> concerns a household&#8217;s income and expenditure, so covers the &#8216;earning&#8217; and the &#8216;spending&#8217; of our lives. A very wide ranging topic, but one we can ALL improve upon.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I&#8217;m often struck by awe at the unbridled enthusiasm and energy in our management classes. Right the way through from graduates in FTSE100 companies, to their director counterparts, everyone is switched on to business. Whereas in the past, &#8216;business&#8217; was for businessmen&#8217;, this is totally not the case anymore. Television programmes such as Dragons Den have engaged the public with entrepreneurial spirit again, after several decades of corporate dominance of the business landscape.</p>
<p>Smartphones and their quirky mobile apps have also given birth to a new generation of &#8216;bedroom entrepreneurs&#8217;, quickly managing teams of 10s or even 100s and preparing for IPOs. In an information age, the young are heavily advantaged due to their quick uptake of new ideas and technologies. As to where this leaves the old crew &#8211; the old boys, I&#8217;m not quite so sure, but with sufficient use of good <a href="http://www.leadership-expert.co.uk/leadership-traits/">leadership traits</a>, we can accept the new higher rates of change, and use solid leadership skills to help nurture and manage these growing businesses quickly. Whilst the technology at the heart of the Silicon Valley start ups is revolutionary &#8211; their organization structures and management principles are not necessarily distinct from the corporate world.</p>
<p>Take the recent mega-success that is Facebook (Or &#8216;The Facebook&#8217;, as it was originally known). Facebook was not exactly a first mover in the digital world, but it adopted a more rigorous approach to product improvement that meant it continued to pace ahead of the competition in terms of features and user visits. The technology was new &#8211; but the process of continuous improvement was exported from Japan in the 1970-1980s to the western world, and has been assimilated ever since. This approach would have been recommend by any leader skilled in the art of leadership, and whom possessed good<a href="http://www.leadership-expert.co.uk/leadership-styles/"> leadership styles</a>.</p>
<p>Lots of great books about leadership, included <a href="http://www.leadership-expert.co.uk/leadership-books/">leadership books</a> such as &#8216;<a href="http://www.jimcollins.com/article_topics/articles/good-to-great.html">From Good to Great</a>&#8216; by Jim Collins.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Author of Leadership Expert, Simon Oates, has today launched a new website called Financial-Expert.co.uk. Simon aims to deliver a variety of content encompassing all elements of personal finance, from mortgages to investing, commodities to savings accounts.</p>
<p>Financial Expert&#8217;s first guide is entitled <a href="http://www.financial-expert.co.uk/how-to-invest-in-commodities/">How to Invest in Commodities</a>, which addresses the curiosity that retail investors have for this somewhat mysterious asset class. Commodities have posted awesome gains in the past few years, but will this continue? Who knows &#8211; Simon himself doesn&#8217;t want to make that call. Instead, he recommends an absolute cap at 5% for a commodities <a href="http://www.twenty-first.com/pdf/jti_commodities.pdf">allocation within your portfolio</a>. Also he recommends to only invest in a broad basket of commodities rather than isolating individual ETFs, although he provides lists of the latter in case investors of large portfolios wish to build a basket themselves.</p>
<p>This conservative and passive approach is much the attitude adopted across the whole website. While the author makes it clear that Financial Expert offers financial information (to supplement research and generate ideas), rather than advice, it often sounds like he writes as if he were advising a friend on what they should do with their money. With this context in mind, I find Financial Expert a trustworthy avenue for investing principles, and a good place to start off when considering whether to invest or not, and how to go about it.</p>
<p>While he doesn&#8217;t give financial advice, Simon details what financial advisors do, what to expect from them, and points out in which situations you should go to them. This is a very responsible stance that you don&#8217;t often see from other financial websites.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I&#8217;ve received a question in from a reader of my blog, on how one can put out the idea of a change of leader in a team. This topic is essentially all about change management, a field in which experts such as <a href="http://www.leadership-expert.co.uk/stephen-warrilow-change-management-expert/" target="_blank">Stephen Warrilow </a>and others command quite alot of authority.</p>
<p>In short, I think it probably depends alot on your leadership style, and also, how much you really want a change of leader. If you&#8217;re prepared to put your heart and soul into leading a delicate campaign for your existing leaders removal &#8211; I believe you can make it happen, however this may come with certain costs, such as damaged egos, damaged relationships, and a fragmented team.</p>
<p>Simply put, if you&#8217;re desperate for a change of leadership, you want to be gauging the opinions of other members of your team. If they appear to be in support, then talking more about the subject will clarify this in their mind, and will make them more likely to support you in any political-style bid to appoint a new leader. You then probably want to think about who is above your leader. Who has the authority to actually change the leader of the team? Whoever has that power is the most important person who needs to agree with  you. Your team could actually disagree with the change, but as long as your bosses boss agrees &#8211; it could still happen.</p>
<p>Step 1: Gauge opinion of collegues.</p>
<p>Step 2: Gauge opinion of the boss of your boss.</p>
<p>Step 3. Evaluate. Would pursuing this objective be a) possible, and b) good for the company.</p>
<p>Step 4: Stir up support from your colleagues for such a change, and approach the head boss and voice your concerns.</p>
<p>Step5: After you&#8217;ve made your business case, wait to see what happens!</p>
